THE LOWDOWN

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (53-1-2) is arguably the face of boxing right now with the Mexican superstar all the rage as he makes his return to the ring. He was last beaten in 2013 when he went down to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by a majority decision but has won every fight since then, other than when drawing with Gennadiy Golovkin in 2017. Alvarez got the better of the same opponent in his next fight and has not looked back since with him showing his class at both middleweight and light heavyweight in the process.

Callum Smith (27-0) has long been touted for a shot at the big time and he finally gets it in what is by far and away the biggest bout of his career to date. The reigning WBA super middleweight title holder will put that belt on the line as he aims to cause an upset but he will back his ability having impressed for a long period. While he hasn’t faced anyone in the same class as Alvarez, he has some solid wins under his belt including against George Groves in what was an impressive KO victory at the end of 2018.

THE PREDICTION

Alvarez starts this fight as big favourite against Smith but he is certainly not just turning up to make up the numbers and he will feel he can get at his opponent in this division owing to his size. Canelo will not worry about that too much having fought at light heavyweight in his last fight against Sergey Kovalev and despite now dropping down, he knows he has the power to deal with Smith. Canelo is likely to work the body to counter the size of Smith and that could make it a long fight for the Englishman, although if he can utilise his size when moving forward, it makes for an intriguing encounter. Smith was under-par in his last showing against John Ryder and needs to show a marked improvement on that nervy performance but he can demonstrate that he belongs on the world stage by sending this one to the scorecards.

Prediction: Alvarez to win by decision
