Botic van de Zandschulp’s form has taken a hit since he reached the final of the Winston-Salem Open on the eve of the US Open. That was his best result of the season, but he has now lost five of his last six matches and failed to get out of qualifying for Beijing last week.
His first-round opponent Nuno Borges is also failing to impress in recent weeks. Since getting through to the third-round of the Canadian Open, he has lost seven out of a possible nine matches. That was the last time Borges was able to win consecutive matches at a tournament.
Both players will be pretty low on confidence and neither have shown that they deserve to be the favourite for this one due to their recent displays, even though Borges is around 20 places higher in the world rankings. There’s a strong possibility that this heads into a third set.
