Botic van de Zandschulp battled his way past Joao Fonseca to record his first win in five matches. The Dutchman was down in both sets, trailing Fonseca 4-2 in the first set and saving a set point in the second as the Brazilian teenager aimed to square the match up at 5-3 up. Van de Zandschulp found his best level towards the end of set one and two to win 7-5 7-6.
He will now take on Eliot Spizzirri. It was a very comfortable first-round match for the American as he thrashed Pedro Martinez 6-4 6-1. He broke the Martinez serve on three occasions, did not face a break point and won 96% of his first serve points to win after just an hour and 17 minutes.
Van de Zandschulp will take a lot of positives from his performance against Fonseca but he’s still in for a difficult match if Spizzirri replicates his display from the first-round.
