Botic van de Zandschulp battled past Daniel Merida in three sets to book his place in the next round of the Shanghai Masters. The Dutchman was outplayed in the first set but levelled the match up in the second. He opened up a 4-0 lead in the decider, and despite relinquishing one of the breaks, he would go on to win 1-6 6-3 6-4.

He will play Alex Michelsen next. The American received a bye in the opening round. Michelsen was handed a tough draw at the Japan Open as he faced seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the first-round. Despite impressing and winning the second set, Michelsen would lose out in the third. 

This a match between two players who shone at Flushing Meadows last month, with both progressing to the quarter-finals. Michelsen is continuing to develop as a player, and he will start as the favourite to win against Van de Zandschulp.
