Bianca Andreescu did not even give up a break point as she raced to a 6-1 6-3 victory against Joanna Garland in the first-round. The Canadian, who made the final of this event last year, is continuing her recovery after spending nearly six months away from the tour due to injury.
She takes on Lulu Sun in the next round. The New Zealander, who made the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year, enjoyed a comfortable first-round match as she also won 6-1 6-3. Sun made a very strong start against Anouck Vrancken Peeters and took the first set with ease. Both players traded breaks early on in the second but Sun won four consecutive service games to get it done in straight sets.
This is likely to be a close encounter, with Andreescu enjoying a fine recent record at the event and Sun’s aggressive game matching well with grass, as shown last year at the All England Club. There is no clear favourite and we expect this to go the full distance.
