ENGLAND VS IRAN
With the quality at England’s disposal, they have no excuse not to hit the ground running in Qatar. Historically, the Three Lions have started slowly in terms of performances and this is something that boss Southgate will no doubt want to rectify here. Whilst Iran pose a genuine threat going forward through the likes of Taremi, England contain far superior depth and attacking firepower, which the Iranian defence should be unable to cope with over 90 minutes. Expect England to win comfortably and by at least two clear goals.

SENEGAL VS NETHERLANDS
It is impossible to understate the significance of Mane’s absence from this Senegal side. He was their lynchpin, their superstar and key to unlocking opposition defences. Without him, it’s more than likely that Aliou Cisse’s side will struggle offensively, especially here against Netherlands who are expected to be among the strongest teams in the tournament from a defensive perspective. Notoriously well-drilled under Van Gaal, Netherlands should dominate large portions of this game, although Senegal themselves won’t prove easy to break down with the likes of Koulibaly among their backline. However, the overriding quality of Netherlands should see them do enough to edge this one and makes them worth backing to overcome the reigning African champions.

UNITED STATES VS WALES
With England in the same group, this is an absolutely crucial encounter for both these two countries, because the loser would almost certainly need to gain a positive result against the Three Lions to give themselves a chance of making the knockout stage. This may lead to a cagey affair, as both teams prioritise defensive stability and not allowing the opposition to dominate their half. The likes of Pulisic and Bale are capable of conjuring up a moment of magic at any time and are each likely to be closely marked by their opponents. Therefore, it would be no surprise if clear cut chances for either team are in short supply and regardless of the final outcome, backing under 2.5 goals scored has to be favoured.
