Benjamin Hassan got past three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw of the French Open. He defeated Pavel Kotov, Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg and James Kent Trotter along the way without the drop of a set. He exclusively competes on the Challenger Tour, with his best finish in recent months being two quarter-final appearances in Girona and Bordeaux respectively.
Matteo Gigante is another player who has also qualified. Like Hassan, the Italian competes mostly in Challengers and won an event in Rome during late April. Gigante performed well in his last qualifying round to beat 10th seed Elmer Moller 6-3 7-6.
They’ve never played on the main tour against each other but have played on clay in a Challenger before. Hassan defeated Gigante 6-4 1-6 6-1 in September 2023 in the second-round of the Braga Open. Neither player has won a Grand Slam match before, and both are ranked beyond the top 150 of the world rankings. We predict a very tight match with no clear winner.
