Benjamin Bonzi defeated former world number one Daniil Medvedev in the first-round of a Grand Slam for the second time in succession after winning a thriller in five sets. It was all plain sailing for Bonzi as he served for the match at two sets up, but drama ensued as an interference at match point led to Medvedev whipping up the crowd in frustration and breaking back, before winning the next two sets to draw level. A topsy-turvy decider saw breaks being traded but Bonzi kept his cool to win 6-3 7-5 6-7 0-6 6-4.
He will now face Marcos Giron. The American had been struggling for results heading into the major but picked up his first win in five matches against Mariano Navone. Navone had won their previous encounter just last week in Winston-Salem but this was Giron’s time as he held off a fightback from the Argentine to win 6-0 7-5 4-6 5-7 6-4.
Both struggled at times despite getting through their respective five set matches, and these two evenly ranked players could play out another thriller in the second-round.
