Benjamin Bonzi produced a thrilling comeback to win his second consecutive five set match at the US Open as he defeated Marcos Giron. The Frenchman looked set for a round two exit after going down two sets and a break, but came back to win 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4. Bonzi was not broken again after the middle of the third set and showcased his tenacity as he advanced to the third-round in New York for the second time.
Arthur Rinderknech also came back from the brink against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as he beat the Washington Open finalist in five sets. Davidovich Fokina looked set to come out on top in the decider at 3-1 up, but the Frenchman reeled off five straight games in a row to win a thrilling battle. Rinderknech won 6-4 3-6 2-6 6-2 6-3.
Those two matches will have taken a lot out of both players, but they will have to do it all over again here. Bonzi’s aggressive groundstrokes will cause Rinderknech problems, but the latter has a stronger serve which will provide him with plenty of free points. This could very well go the distance.
