Ben Shelton continued his unbeaten run on grass this season as he defeated Ethan Quinn in three sets. The world number five went in front after the first set, but Quinn extended the contest after winning the second. Nevertheless, Shelton responded in the decider to win 6-4 5-7 6-4. He defeated Lorenzo Sonego in his opening match.
He will now face compatriot Taylor Fritz for the second time in less than a week. Fritz comfortably got past Fabian Marozsan in the round-of-16. The American won a commanding 94% of first serve points and only conceded two break points as he won 6-2 6-4.
This is a rematch of the Stuttgart Open final last week, which saw Shelton win in three sets. He also beat Fritz in the final of the Dallas Open earlier this year. The 23-year-old does seem to have a mental edge over Fritz at this stage, but the 2024 US Open finalist will always be competitive with his serve on this surface.
