Ben Shelton began his US Open campaign in serene fashion as he beat Ignacio Buse in straight sets. The American was not broken on serve as he wrapped up a comfortable 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory. The world number six won his first Masters tournament in Toronto earlier this month and is viewed as one of the favourites to make a deep run here over the next two weeks.
He will face Pablo Carreno Busta next after the Spaniard defeated compatriot Pablo Llamas Ruiz in straight sets. The 34-year-old held serve throughout as he won 7-6 6-4 6-2 after two hours and 26 minutes.
Shelton will be the big favourite here and is likely to press Carreno Busta from the beginning with his strong lefty serve and whipped forehand. The 2017 and 2020 semi-finalist has consistency and experience but he lacks the weapons to trouble the American over five sets. Shelton in three is a strong possibility.
