Ben Shelton has endured a mixed clay court season up to now. There was a big high at the BMW Open, as he came back from the brink of defeat in his first-round match to make it all the way to the final but lost tamely to Alexander Zverev. The American has won just one match from his other three events however, as he lost early on in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
Lorenzo Sonego started the season off with a fabulous run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. However, the Italian’s form has dried up on the clay as he’s managed just one victory. That came in the first-round of the Madrid Open against Miomir Kecmanovic but he went on to lose to Alex de Minaur. He did not enjoy his home event, losing at the earliest possible stage at the Italian Open.
Shelton leads the head-to-head 2-1 but Sonego came out on top in their only match on clay in the first-round of the French Open last year. Despite that defeat, Shelton seems to have improved on the surface since then and should have enough for victory against the out-of-form Italian.
