Ben Shelton produced his best performance since coming back from injury as he defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets. In a match which mirrored his second-round encounter against Flavio Cobolli, Shelton edged a tight first set and then broke for the first time in the middle of the second to seal a 7-6 (6) 6-3 win.
He now faces Jannik Sinner. The world number two was not at his best but still beat Francisco Cerundolo to make the last eight of the event for the first time in his career. The Italian seemed to be struggling with fatigue and was broken on two occasions in the first set, though he did race clear in the second to win 7-5 6-1.
Sinner dominates the head-to-head 5-1. Shelton won their first match in Shanghai two years ago, but the four-time Grand Slam champion has won every match since. Sinner’s display in the round-of-16 may give Shelton some hope, but he’s going to need to return well if he is to have a chance. The number of matches in succession could be starting to catch up with Sinner, but he should still squeeze through.
