The fourth seed won the all-American tussle with the wildcard 6-3 6-4, dropping just seven points on his serve throughout the contest.
The 22-year-old will now face Gabriel Diallo after the Canadian posted a 6-3 6-4 win over Fabian Marozsan.
This will be a first tour-level meeting although Diallo did prevail 5-7 7-6 6-3 in a lower tier hardcourt event three years ago.
This match will be all about the serve with both players capable of taking the racquet out of their opponent’s hand.
