Ben Shelton competed in Basel but lost in the second-round to Jaume Munar in straight sets. He also suffered an early exit at the start of the month in Shanghai and has been unable to get any form going since his return from a shoulder injury. The American has still had a very encouraging season, with his first Masters title and reaching number six in the world, but he is not quite there in terms of performance level at the moment.
He faces Flavio Cobolli after receiving a bye in round one. Cobolli comfortably defeated Tomas Machac in straight sets to advance. It was a thoroughly dominant victory for the Italian, who did not even concede a break point and won 94% of his first serve points, as he came through to win 6-1 6-4.
The head-to-head is locked at 2-2, with Shelton winning the last two matches. Their last match in Toronto this year was dramatic, as Cobolli served for the match, but Shelton went on to break and win the contest in a deciding tiebreak on his way to the title. There was also a tense exchange of words between the pair at the end of the match.
Given his pedigree, Shelton will start as the favourite, but he is not at his best right now and Cobolli will be motivated to put up a strong showing. The Italian has produced really impressive performances in his last two matches against Jannik Sinner and Machac and could certainly take a set off the world number seven.
