Ben Shelton began his Halle Open campaign with a straight sets win over Lorenzo Sonego. Shelton had won their previous grass court encounter at Wimbledon last year, and he was on the winning side once again as he wrapped up a 7-5 6-3 win. The world number five was pegged back after going a break up in the middle of the first set but was able to break again when Sonego was serving to stay in it. A single break in the sixth game of the second proved decisive, and the American remains unbeaten on grass this season after his title win at the Stuttgart Open last week.

He will now face Ethan Quinn for a place in the quarter-finals. Quinn notched up a fine win in the opening round as he recovered from a tough start to beat Karen Khachanov in three sets. Khachanov progressed to the semi-finals of this event last year and looked on course for the win after comfortably taking the lead. However, Quinn was resolute on serve in the next two sets to win 1-6 6-4 6-4.

Shelton has made a perfect start to the grass court season, and it is likely to continue with another win here.
