Ben Shelton marked his 24th birthday with a straight sets win over Daniel Altmaier at the Shanghai Masters. The US Open finalist took the lead after winning the first set and edged ahead in the second set tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6 (6). Shelton’s best previous result at the tournament was a quarter-final appearance back in 2023.

He now faces Arthur Gea. The Frenchman continued his impressive season with a win over compatriot Ugo Humbert in the previous round. Gea, who came from a set down to defeat Jaime Faria in round one, won the first five games of the decider as he completed a 6-4 3-6 6-1 victory after one hour and 46 minutes. He won his first tour-level title at the Los Cabos Open and is now up to 51 in the live rankings.

Despite his development, Gea is likely to find it tough against Shelton, especially with the American’s serve on this fast surface.
