Ben Shelton advanced to the next stage of the Paris Masters after defeating Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. The American crucially saved a break point at 4-4 in the first set and managed to edge ahead in the tiebreak to take the lead. He then broke for the first time in the match in the sixth game of the second to win 7-6 6-3. He only conceded the one break point during the match.
He now faces Andrey Rublev as he continued his slight resurgence with a straight sets win over Learner Tien. The Russian took the first and then recovered from going 3-0 down in the second to win 6-4 6-4 after an hour and 20 minutes. Rublev saved eight out of nine break points on his serve, though still won 87% of his points on first serve.
They have faced each other on one previous occasion, and it was also indoors, as Shelton defeated Rublev in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors last year. If the American is able to serve as well as he did against Cobolli, he has a very strong chance of advancing further.
