Belinda Bencic vs Sofia Kenin prediction

Belinda Bencic mounted a superb fightback in the quarter-finals against Karolina Muchova to book her place in the last four of the Pan Pacific Open. Muchova started the better of the two and took the first set, before going on to serve for the match in the second. However, Bencic would break on two occasions to level the match up. Muchova had the opportunity to serve for it again in set three and even had a match point, but Bencic was not to be denied as the pendulum swung her way once more. The Swiss won an epic match 3-6 7-5 7-5.

She now goes up against Sofia Kenin. The American registered her best win for quite some time as she saved four match points and also staged an impressive comeback to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets. Alexandrova has been one of the most consistent players on tour this season, but Kenin made a storming start to take the lead. However, the Russian then dominated as she took the second set and raced into a commanding 5-2 lead in the third. Despite being match points down, Kenin fought back to take the set into a deciding tiebreak, which ultimately went her way. Kenin won 6-0 2-6 7-6 (3) after two hours and 17 minutes.

Both players come into this on the back of dramatic quarter-final victories. This is their first match against each other on a hard court but Kenin leads the head-to-head 2-0 and won their match in Charleston on clay earlier this season. Nevertheless, Bencic has shown herself to be the stronger hard court player in recent times and has enjoyed the more impressive season. Kenin cannot be counted out completely, but the Swiss will start this semi-final as the clear favourite to advance.
