Belinda Bencic vs Elise Mertens prediction
Belinda Bencic got her Wuhan Open campaign off to a fine start as she brushed aside Donna Vekic in the first-round. The Swiss converted all five of her break point opportunities as she won 6-2 6-2 after just an hour and 13 minutes. Bencic will hope for another deep run at a big tournament, having made the last four of Wimbledon and the quarter-finals of Indian Wells, along with a title in Abu Dhabi during the earlier part of the season.
She will now face Elise Mertens. The Belgian ended a three match losing run with a straight sets win over Polina Kudermetova. A close encounter saw Mertens recover from a deficit in the tiebreak to win the first set and save break points as she was serving for the match in the second. She won 7-6 6-3. Mertens has won two titles this season and made an additional final, but has struggled to produce a deep run since making the last-16 of Wimbledon in July.
These two have only played once before, with Mertens comfortably winning at the 2021 Australian Open. Bencic possesses a bit more variety and firepower, which should translate well on the Wuhan courts.
