Belinda Bencic came from a set and a break down to defeat Priscilla Hon and make it through to the round-of-16 in Beijing. Bencic made a strong start to the match as she went into a 4-2 lead, only for Hon to fight back and reel off six matches in a row to take the first set and establish a 2-0 lead. Nevertheless, the Swiss responded superbly as she did not face a break point for the rest of the match and broke Hon’s serve on three occasions to win 4-6 6-4 6-3.
Coco Gauff kept up the defence of her title with a hard-fought win against Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian forced a deciding set after breaking at the end of the second. Gauff established a commanding 5-2 lead but was broken on two straight occasions when serving for the match. Nevertheless, it was third time lucky for the two-time Grand Slam singles champion after breaking to go 6-5 up. She won 6-4 4-6 7-5 after two hours and 45 minutes.
The head-to-head is 3-2 in Gauff’s favour but 2-2 on hard courts. They have played each other twice this season, with Bencic coming from a set down to win at Indian Wells, and Gauff winning comfortably in Madrid. We expect this one to be close, but the defending champion’s aggression and firepower gives her the advantage.
