Belinda Bencic came from a set down to battle her way past Taylor Townsend in the third-round of the Canadian Open. The 29-year-old dropped the first set on a tiebreak but responded by taking the second in a breaker of her own. Bencic crucially broke Townsend’s serve in the ninth game of the decider and served it out to win 6-7 (5) 7-6 (4) 6-4 after three hours and 24 minutes.
She will now face Alexandra Eala, after the Filipino extended her winning run to seven matches with a similarly hard-fought victory over Caty McNally. The Washington Open champion served for the match in the second set but failed to close it out, with McNally reeling off three consecutive games to level proceedings. Eala secured the decisive break in the opening game of the final set before holding firm to complete a 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory.
