Beatriz Haddad Maia edged a close encounter with Elina Svitolina to book her place in the last eight of the Bad Homburg Open. The Brazilian went 4-1 up in the deciding set but allowed the Ukrainian back into the contest, with the match decided on a tiebreak. Haddad Maia finally won the match on her fifth match point to seal a 3-6 6-4 7-6 win.
She faces Jasmine Paolini after the second seed got past Leylah Fernandez in the previous round. Both sets were very close, but Paolini managed to take them both on tiebreaks after saving two set points in the first set and three in the second. The Italian had a match point at 5-2 in the second set but Fernandez fought back and asked questions of the second seed.
Paolini leads the head-to-head 2-0, coming from behind to win both matches but this will be their first contest on grass. The Italian’s game is not completely flourishing on the grass and Haddad Maia, a two-time winner on the surface, is likely to provide stern opposition. This could go all the way.
