Ashlyn Krueger advanced to round two after a win over Sara Bejlek. The American made a fast start, breaking twice in succession to open up a comfortable lead in the first set. She went a break down in the second but quickly responded with a break of her own and wrapped up a 6-3 6-3 win after one hour and 20 minutes.

She will now face defending champion Madison Keys. The 30-year-old overcome some dangerous moments in the first set to beat Oleksandra Oliynykova. The Ukrainian won the first four games in the match and served for the first set at 6-5, but Keys broke back to force a tiebreak. The nervy moments did not stop there for the world number nine, as she was forced to save a set point before going on to take it. The second was far more straight-forward as Keys won 7-6 (6) 6-1.

Krueger is likely to be a tougher opponent for Keys, who will need to produce a better performance this time around.
