Ashlyn Krueger lost a tight match with Maria Sakkari in the first-round of the China Open. At three hours and 29 minutes, it was one of the longest matches on the WTA Tour this year. This follows a similarly early exit in Seoul, and the American is without a win in her last three matches. Krueger’s best results of 2025 were right at the start of the year, as she reached two quarter-finals in Brisbane and Adelaide, before going on to make the final in Abu Dhabi all the way back in February.
Her opponent in Wuhan is fellow American Hailey Baptiste. She was also an early casualty in Beijing as she lost a three set match to Great Britain’s Katie Boulter. Baptiste has struggled for most of the season, but did reach the round-of-16 at Roland Garros and made the quarters in Auckland right at the start of the year.
There are just six places separating these two in the world rankings and neither player is in the best of form. This has the makings of a close three set match.
