Ashlyn Krueger proved just too much for Katie Volynets in the second round, battling her way through to the third round of the tournament with a 6-3 7-6 win in a high-quality match.
The 15th seed faces another compatriot in Emma Navarro, who got her Charleston Open underway with a 6-4 6-3 win over Hailey Baptiste. Navarro was not at her best at all, giving up 13 break point opportunities in the match, yet Baptiste was only able to convert one of them.
These two have played just once before, with Navarro thrashing Krueger 6-1 6-1 at the final in Charlottesville in April 2023 on hard court.
Krueger enjoyed a fine run to the fourth round of Miami just last month and produced an impressive performance to defeat Volynets, so she’s clearly heading into some decent form and could cause problems for the higher-ranked Navarro. We’re backing her to spring something of a surprise and advance through to the next round in a tight match.
