Aryna Sabalenka needed six match points to finally clinch a straight sets victory over Talia Gibson. Sabalenka took the first set with ease and served for the match, but Gibson, who reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells earlier this year, broke back. The four-time Grand Slam champion regrouped to win 6-3 7-6 (2). The world number one struck 13 aces, but it was far from a polished performance overall.
Xinyu Wang is her next opponent after she came from a set down to beat Donna Vekic in the second-round of the Cincinnati Open. The Chinese player, who defeated Hanne Vandewinkel in round one, won 77% of her first serve points as she claimed a 3-6 6-1 6-4 victory after two hours and 11 minutes.
Sabalenka is the clear favourite, but her opening performance was not flawless, and Wang arrives with confidence after that comeback win over Vekic. Ultimately, Sabalenka’s superior serve and ability to dominate the biggest points should eventually prove too much.
