Aryna Sabalenka was far from her best but got past Anastasia Potapova in two close sets to make the round-of-16 at the Australian Open. Sabalenka edged ahead after taking control of the first set tiebreak and looked set for victory as she raced to a 4-0 lead in the second. However, Potapova fought back with two consecutive breaks of serve, and then breaking once again when Sabalenka served for the match at 5-4. It went to another tiebreak, with Potapova having three set points, but the world number would save them all and go on to win 7-6 (4) 7-6 (7).

She faces Victoria Mboko next. The Canadian continued her best ever run at a major after defeating Clara Tauson in three sets. Mboko served for the match at 5-3 in the second, but Tauson turned the match on its head with two consecutive breaks and took the match into a decider. Mboko showed great resolve to go on and win 7-6 (5) 5-7 6-3.

Sabalenka will need to improve her level if she is to get past the 19-year-old, but the four-time Grand Slam champion’s experience should help see her through to the next stage.
