The world number one’s season began incredibly strongly, with titles in Brisbane, Indian Wells and Miami, along with another final at the Australian Open. However, her results have taken a downturn since March. She will hope for a stronger run at the Cincinnati Open, having won the event two years ago.
She faces Talia Gibson in her opening match. The Australian picked up a win in the first-round after a hard-fought victory over Lilli Tagger. Gibson failed to serve out the match at the first attempt, but she broke again in the very next game before successfully closing out a 4-6 6-1 7-5 win after two hours and 35 minutes. She has performed strongly at WTA 1000 hard court events this season, highlighted by a run to the last eight at Indian Wells as a qualifier.
