Aryna Sabalenka began her quest for a third straight US Open title with a straight sets win over Camila Osorio. The world number one comfortably went ahead after the first set but was made to work in the second, as she saved two break points at 3-2 down before asserting control to complete a 6-2 6-4 win. Sabalenka arrived in New York having suffered a surprising round-of-16 defeat in Cincinnati to Sara Bejlek, but she was able to navigate her way through this opening match.

She now faces Polina Iatcenko after she produced a fine comeback to beat Renata Zarazua. Iatcenko, who had to qualify for the event, was 5-3 down in the deciding set and within two points from defeat but went on to win 4-6 6-4 7-6 after three hours and 27 minutes.

If Sabalenka maintains her aggression without allowing the error count to climb, she should be able to control proceedings.
