Aryna Sabalenka continued her progress in Brisbane as she defeated Sorana Cirstea in straight sets. The world number one, who is the defending champion at this event, won 78% of her first serve points as she defeated the Romanian 6-3 6-3 after one hour and 19 minutes.
She will face Madison Keys in the next round. Keys defeated Diana Shnaider in a hard-fought three set match to get through. The American looked to be on her way out as she went a set and 4-2 down but responded well to win 6-7 (5) 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4).
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 5-2 and has won four of their last five matches. However, Keys did win their most high-profile encounter, in the final of the Australian Open last year, to claim her maiden Grand Slam title. Nevertheless, Sabalenka has looked in complete control so far and is likely to dominate from the off against Keys, who was not at her best in her previous match.
