Aryna Sabalenka recovered from a slow start to advance at the Wuhan Open against Rebecca Sramkova. The three-time defending champion had not competed at an event since her US Open triumph and did show some signs of rust but still came through to win 6-7 6-3 6-1 after one hour and 58 minutes.

Liudmila Samsonova will be her next opponent. She also came from a set down to win, beating Sofia Kenin of the United States. Despite going behind, Samsonova dominated the last two sets to win 3-6 6-3 6-1. She won 82% of her first serve points.

Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 3-2. Their most recent encounter took place earlier in the season, with the four-time Grand Slam champion comfortably winning 6-2 6-3 in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells. Samsonova will be a tougher test for Sabalenka, but she is likely to put in a much-improved display with a match now under her belt.
