Aryna Sabalenka vs Jessica Pegula prediction

Aryna Sabalenka got off to a blistering start in Riyadh as she searches for a first WTA Finals title, comfortably getting past Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. The world number one served superbly, producing a first serve percentage of 81% and hammering 11 aces on her way to a 6-3 6-1 victory after just one hour and 10 minutes.

She goes up against Jessica Pegula in the second group stage match. Pegula also won her first match at the event after defeating world number three Coco Gauff in three sets. The American created 18 break point opportunities overall, converting nine of them, as she recovered from losing the second set tiebreak to win 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-2.

Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 8-3 but this will be their first match indoors. Sabalenka won the first two matches this year in Miami and at the US Open, but Pegula did come out on top in their last encounter at the Wuhan Open after a dramatic semi-final last month.

Pegula’s form has been excellent over the last two months, even if she has not had a title to show for it. Sabalenka will be the clear favourite, especially if she serves well again, but the American is likely to make the four-time Grand Slam champion work hard for the victory.
