Aryna Sabalenka battled her way past Emma Raducanu in yet another high-quality encounter between the pair to continue the defence of her title at the Cincinnati Open. Sabalenka edged a tight first set but Raducanu broke in the second to force a decider. A dramatic third set, which included a 22 minute service game as Raducanu struggled to hold serve in game eight, eventually led to the world number one prevailing in yet another tiebreak to win 7-6 4-6 7-6 after more than three hours.
She goes up against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro next. The Spaniard continued her fine run of form on hard courts as she claimed a 6-4 6-1 win over Taylor Townsend. She is yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament, and she has backed up her performance at the Canadian Open, which saw her make the last eight.
They played each other for the first time earlier this season, with Sabalenka winning 6-3 7-5 in the second-round of the Australian Open in January.
Sabalenka needed to be at her best to overcome the threat of Raducanu and that is likely to stand her in good stead for the rest of the tournament. Bouzas Maneiro is progressing as a player, but the world number one will be a strong favourite to overpower the 22-year-old.
