Aryna Sabalenka is seeking her first ever WTA Finals title, having already clinched the year end world number one spot. The 27-year-old has competed in just one tournament since winning her fourth Grand Slam title at the US Open, losing in the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open to Jessica Pegula which ended her long unbeaten run at that specific tournament. Sabalenka finished runners up at two other majors, the Australian Open and French Open, while she won three more titles in Brisbane, Miami and Madrid, with the last two being 1000 events.
She faces Jasmine Paolini in her first group stage match. The Italian enjoyed a fine stretch of the season after the US Open. She played a pivotal role in Italy retaining the Billie Jean King Cup as she was unbeaten in her singles matches, while her Asian swing saw her make the quarter-finals in Beijing and reach the last four in Wuhan and Ningbo. There were other strong results too in 2025, with Paolini winning her home title in Rome and making a final in Cincinnati.
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 5-2 and 2-0 indoors. They faced each other in the group stage here last year, with the world number one coming through to win 6-3 7-5. They have since met on two more occasions, in Miami and Stuttgart, with Sabalenka winning both matches in straight sets. The world number one has never won this event and will be looking to get off to a strong start.
