Four-time Grand Slam winner Aryna Sabalenka began her French Open campaign with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round. Sabalenka has not quite got over the line at Roland Garros. She was close to doing so last year after an impressive run to then lose to Coco Gauff in the final.
Elsa Jacquemot defeated Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round, winning 6-4, 6-3. Jacquemot, ranked 67th in the world, has suffered five successive defeats since beating Lola Radivojevic in the Billie Jean King Cup in early April. Jacquemot pulled off an upset against Maria Kostyuk at the Australian Open – but that is her only regular tournament win since a WTA Challenger event in Limoges last year.
Jacquemot will believe home advantage may help her out but the likelihood is for another comfortable and potentially emphatic Sabalenka victory.
