Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the next stage in Toronto after she defeated Shuai Zhang in straight sets. The world number one was not broken on serve and conceded just two break points as she completed a 6-3 6-4 victory after one hour and 16 minutes. She now has a 25-1 win-loss record on hard courts this season, with that loss coming in the final of the Australian Open to Elena Rybakina. She is also the quickest player to reach 25 hard court wins in a season since Serena Williams in 2016.
She will now play Ekaterina Alexandrova after the Russian came from a set down to beat Talia Gibson in the third-round. Gibson had won their meeting at Indian Wells earlier in the season and looked on course to do so again after taking the first set. However, Alexandrova fought back to win 5-7 6-1 6-3.
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 5-4 but it’s 2-2 on outdoor hard court. Alexandrova has caused problems for Sabalenka in the past, but it’s difficult to see another upset on the cards here.
