Arthur Rinderknech got past Roberto Carballes Baena in four sets to advance to the second-round of the US Open. Davidovich Fokina stormed into the next stage of the tournament after a crushing 6-1 6-1 6-2 win over Alexander Shevchenko, with the Spaniard not being broken on serve throughout the match. His decision to rest up after retirements in Toronto and Cincinnati seem an inspired choice, and he coped well with the conditions as he outclassed Shevchenko over three sets.

Rinderknech can always be a threat with that serve, but Davidovich Fokina has three final appearances on hard court this season and will be viewed as a comfortable favourite to advance.
