Arthur Gea impressed once again in 2026, as he qualified for the China Open with wins over Rigele Ti and Tomas Machac. He then continued his run with a win in the first-round against Zhizhen Zhang, before a three set loss to Hubert Hurkacz. The Frenchman began the season ranked outside the world’s top 200, but he is up to 52 in the live rankings. Gea won his first tour-level title at the Los Cabos Open during the summer. 

He will play Jaime Faria in round one. The Portuguese competed in Tokyo, defeating Arthur Fery in his first-round match before a loss to Jaume Munar. He had only entered the tournament as a lucky loser. Faria’s most impressive result of the season was in Cincinnati, as he advanced to the round-of-16 at a Masters event for the first time in his career. 

There are just four places separating the pair in the rankings, with both having enjoyed breakout seasons in 2026. This has the makings of a competitive first-round encounter.
