He won a Challenger title in Noumea and continued the momentum with three wins in Australian Open qualifying to enter the main draw of a slam for the first time. He then recorded the best win of his career in round one as he defeated Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. His run would end against veteran Stan Wawrinka, but Gea will hope to continue his form in Montpellier this week.
He faces Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The big serving Frenchman lost in the first-round of the Australian Open after a five set defeat to Sebastian Baez. There was some encouragement at the start of last month with back-to-back quarter-final finishes in Brisbane and Auckland.
Mpetshi Perricard is likely to be a threat indoors this week, but Gea cannot be counted out and should be able to make this a real contest in round one.
