Arthur Fils has had a strong season with three successive quarter-final appearances at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo before going one better and making the semi-finals in Barcelona. He lost in those two clay court events to Carlos Alcaraz on both occasions. He did go a break up in the decider in Monte-Carlo before the Spaniard came back to win in a close match. There was a sudden dip in his game during the Madrid Open, as he lost in the second-round to Francisco Comesana after receiving a bye in the first-round.
Tallon Griekspoor managed to make it through in the first-round of the Italian Open against Miomir Kecmanovic. He came from a set down and raced clear in the third to win 4-6 6-3 6-0.
Fils leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 on clay. Their last encounter was in Monte-Carlo just last month with Fils coming back to win 6-7 6-4 6-2. The young Frenchman did not face a break point that day but Griekspoor will be confident he can exact revenge in Rome.
We think the Frenchman will be out to prove himself again after that slight dip in Madrid and we favour him getting through in straight sets.
