Arthur Fils continued his full return to the tour as he advanced to the round-of-16 stage of the Qatar Open after coming from a set down to beat Kamil Majchrzak. The first set went on serve, with Majchrzak winning three points in a row from 5-4 down in the tiebreak to edge in front. Fils broke for the first time in the fourth game of the second and forced a decider. Both players exchanged breaks right at the start of the third set, but Fils would go on to break again and win 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-4.
He faces fellow countryman Quentin Halys in the next stage of the tournament. Halys only entered the event as a lucky loser but made it through after also recovering from a set down to beat Pablo Carreno Busta. Halys won 4-6 7-5 6-3.
In terms of the ATP head-to-head, Fils leads 2-0. The Frenchman is still only getting back to full fitness, and Halys can certainly worry him for at least a set, but Fils’ stronger peak level and better ball striking gives him the edge.
