Arthur Fery advanced to round two of Wimbledon for the second straight year as he came from a set down to bear Damir Dzumhur. Fery, who reached his first tour-level quarter-final at Queen’s Club a fortnight ago, was also 2-0 down in the second set but completely dominated after that, winning 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-1.
He will now play Otto Virtanen. The Finn pulled off the biggest shock in the men’s draw so far as he dumped fifth seed Ben Shelton out of the tournament in round one. An engrossing match went all the way to a deciding set tiebreak. Shelton was two points away from victory at 8-5 up, but Virtanen saved a match point and reeled off the final three points to win 6-4 3-6 6-7 (8) 6-2 7-6 (9).
Fery will have home support on his side once more, but it’s difficult to look past Virtanen after his recent displays on grass.
