Last meeting: Essex beat Sussex by 4 wickets
THE TEAM NEWS
ESSEX
Coach: Anthony McGrath
Captain: Ryan ten Doeschate
- Essex snapped their three-match losing streak on Sunday by beating a previously unbeaten Hampshire side so that will give them confidence coming into this game as they cannot really afford to lose any more matches now.
- They are boosted by the return of Varun Chopra for this match after he missed the last three games with a muscle strain but the batsman is named in a 16-man squad for this match and they will hope he is passed fit after he hit back-to-back centuries in the opening two games before picking up the injury.
- All-rounders Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate were in sensational form in the win over Hampshire and they have been lacking that support with both bat and ball, so they will hope for similarly important contributions once again here.
SUSSEX
Coach: Jason Gillespie
Captain: Ben Brown
- Sussex sit just behind leaders Somerset and Hampshire in the South Group on six points having played a game less and they will come into this match with good confidence as the only game they have been beaten in was a severely rain-affected match against Somerset.
- Their schedule has not been as hectic as many teams around them so they will be fresh and confidence is high after the stunning knock by Luke Wright last time out against Middlesex where he smashed 166 runs from 142 balls in total of just 298.
- They will need more players to step up here however, while their bowlers continue to be just as important with Mir Hamza especially in outstanding form so far having taken 11 wickets in his opening four matches.
THE PREDICTION
Sussex have the edge in terms of form coming into this game but Essex will be highly motivated especially after their win over Hampshire last time out. They will need to produce a similar level of performance here if they are to beat Sussex however who have started the campaign well. Chopra’s return is massive for them and will give confidence to the rest of the batting order, while their all-rounders look to be stepping up finally. Sussex do have one or two holes in their team without Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer, and a lot will depend on how Essex deal with Mir Hamza who has made a stunning start to the tournament. That could well be the decisive factor in the game and if Essex can hold him at bay, they could edge this match.
