Aoi Ito entered the main draw of this event in Cincinnati after victories over Aleksandra Krunic and Dalma Galfi during the qualifying stages. The 21-year-old is currently ranked 110 in the world. She enjoyed a thoroughly impressive Canadian Open last week as she reached the third-round with three wins in total. This included a victory over two-time Grand Slam finalist and seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.
Elena-Gabriela Ruse is her opponent in the first-round here. The Romanian has not won a match on tour since her run from qualifying all the way to the final of the Libema Open in the middle of June. She then lost in the first-round of Wimbledon, before transitioning to hard courts and again falling at the first hurdle in Prague. She was thoroughly uncompetitive against Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu in the first-round of the Canadian Open last week.
