Antonia Ruzic defeated four-time champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to get through to the round-of-16 in Monterrey. It was a superb display from the world number 89, who faced just one break point and was not broken throughout the match. She edged a tight first set in the tiebreak but completely dominated the second to win 7-6 6-1.
She will now take on Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Cocciaretto beat Leolia Jeanjean in straight sets in the previous round. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Italian, with Jeanjean going a break up in both sets, but Cocciaretto responded well to those setbacks as she broke her opponent’s serve on four occasions overall to win 6-3 6-4.
They played against each other for the first time just last month, with Cocciaretto winning in straight sets in their semi-final match in Bastad on her way to winning the title. There are just two places separating the players in the world rankings and they are both coming into this on the back of impressive victories in the previous round. There’s strong value in a three setter here.
