Antonia Ruzic advanced to the second-round in Wuhan after a fine win over Magda Linette. Linette has struggled for form this season, and it was a mostly dominant victory from the Croatian as she reeled off seven games in a row to take the first set and go 3-0 up. The Pole would rally and draw level in the second by winning three games of her own, but Ruzic was not to be denied as she won 6-2 6-3 after one hour and 30 minutes.
Clara Tauson got back to winning ways as she won her first-round match against Olga Danilovic. The Dane created numerous chances, as she created 14 break point opportunities overall, winning 6-3 7-5. Tauson suffered an early loss at the China Open and will be hoping for a far deeper run in Wuhan this time around. She has already got through to a WTA 1000 final this season, after her displays in Dubai.
Ruzic will have momentum on her side after such a fine round one victory, but Tauson’s strong serve and groundstrokes, along with her greater pedigree, make her the clear favourite.
