Anna Kalinskaya defeated Sonay Kartal in straight sets to make it through to the second-round in Melbourne. She went 3-1 down in the first set but broke back immediately as it went to a tiebreak. She won six of the last seven points in the breaker to go in front, before going on to win the next five games in the second as she won 7-6 (3) 6-1.
She takes on Julia Grabher in the next round. She won her first ever match at the Australian Open after a surprise victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The Italian had picked up the biggest win of her career so far at the Hobart International, but Grabher overcame a slump in the middle of the match to win 7-5 2-6 6-4 after two hours and 29 minutes.
After a tough first set, Kalinskaya was striking the ball with purpose towards the end of her first-round match and she will cause problems for Grabher if she replicates that type of performance.
