Anna Kalinskaya picked up a strong win in round one as she defeated Tereza Valentova in straight sets. The Russian was broken in her very first service game but responded well and went on to win 6-4 6-4 after one hour and 38 minutes. Valentova is a talented young player and Kalinskaya will be encouraged by her first performance of 2026, as she searches for an upturn overall.
She has a tough task in her next match as she goes up against Jessica Pegula. The American picked up three titles last year and ended the season with strong performances in Beijing and Wuhan. Pegula struggled in the early part of the summer but seemed to find form again at the US Open, making the semi-finals.
Pegula leads the head-to-head 3-1 and 2-0 on outdoor hard court. Nevertheless, Kalinskaya did win their last meeting in Strasbourg last year. The American has enough quality to get through but needs to make a strong start.
