Anna Kalinskaya moved into the third-round of the Australian Open after a straight sets win over Julia Grabher. The Russian was broken in her first service game but controlled the rest of the set to take the lead. She encountered problems at the start of the second but recovered to win 6-3 6-3 after one hour and 13 minutes.
She will face world number two Iga Swiatek next. The Pole defeated Marie Bouzkova in straight sets. It wasn’t a flawless display from the five-time Grand Slam champion, as she was broken twice and went 3-1 down in the second set, but she still ultimately came through to win comfortably in the end, defeating Bouzkova 6-2 6-3.
Swiatek leads the head-to-head 2-1. Kalinskaya won their first match in Dubai two years ago, but Swiatek hit back with two wins of her own in the space of two weeks later year in Cincinnati and at the US Open. She does seem to be improving in this tournament and she’s still the overwhelming favourite here.
